Our Club

Our karate club has a long tradition. We are not only the first Gōjū-ryū school in Switzerland, but also one of the oldest karate clubs in the country. For over 50 years, we have been practicing the traditional martial art of Japanese Goju-Ryu Karate in Zurich. Karatekas of various levels train up to 3 times a week in a friendly atmosphere at our dojo near Wiedikon station.

What makes a good
karate club?

A good club fits you, and not the other way around. Are you more competition-oriented or a recreational athlete? Do you want to improve your mental strength and self-discipline, or are you more interested in self-defense, fitness, or weight loss?

  • Our costs are and remain low.
  • We deliver substance and focus on long-term success.
  • With us, you learn techniques that work in practical application.
  • Our training is diverse: traditional karate, sports physiology, fitness, and self-defense.

Everything depends on your goals. The goal of Shobukan Karate Club: to help you progress in every training session.

Karate training is always guided by our most important rule:

Karate never begins with an attack; it serves only for self-defense.

Is Goju-Ryu right for you?

Our Focus
Popular sports for adults aged 18 and over. Karate promotes your fitness, stability, and both mental and physical abilities. For young karatekas, the focus is on good technique, athleticism, and dynamics. With growing experience, we place more value on the correct execution of precise techniques and efficiency of movement. Athletics and fitness take up a large part of the training time.

What you need
No expensive equipment and not much space to train—just good teachers. Goju-Ryu is suitable for all ages, and you can start at any fitness level.

Central self-defense
Our performance levels range from beginner to semi-professional. Self-defense is a high priority for us; conversely, we are not a typical competition dojo, though tournament experience is possible.
